3 Tips To Protect “Important Things” On Your PC

Let’s review some of the basic uses of the computer now a days. Most people use the computer to communicate with people either through business or for personal reasons. Most people keep important documents on their computers again either in their personal computers or at your place of business. A lot of people make transaction involving money through their computers and once again either through your place of business or your personal computer at home. So what am I getting at by pointing out all these obvious things? Just that, we all at some point use our computers for important things and in doing so we have hundreds if not thousands of “important things” on our computers. So why don’t so many people do some of the obvious things to protect our “important things”?

I am of course referring to a few simple things that most people who have access to a computer know about but don’t do thus leaving your important things in harms way possibly. So lets look at some of the most common preventative measures that are surprisingly ignored when it comes to taking care of our computers and the important things they hold for us.

Number one! Back up! Yes backup, honestly when was the last time you did a backup of your hard drive? Or at the very least of your documents, picture and music files? The odds are pretty good that you have not and if you have congratulations you are in the minority! You would think with all the ease that has been put into backup memory from USB connections to zip drives, extra hard drives, smart cards and memory sticks. Backing up your “important stuff” is about as simple as they can make it yet many of us simply don’t do it ( I am guilty of this too!) and never think of it until that dreadful gut wrenching day when your hard drive crashes or a virus gets in and wipes you out. Back it up people and hopefully you will never need it but if you do you will be happy you did!

~Cookiecat at Computer~Another thing that is so simple to do but hardly done is more of a maintenance thing and that is de-fragmenting your hard drive. This can make a huge difference in the performance of your computer especially if you have never done it before. Again this has been made about as simple as can be but for some reason people never think to do it. It’s a task that can be scheduled for peet’s sake. Set it and forget it! Just set it up to be done once a month while your away or sleeping and it won’t even effect you but it will help to keep you running smoother.

OK last one and this is also an obvious one that often gets over looked and that is your anti-virus program. You do have one on your computer right? Of course you do, do you keep the software up to date with anti-virus definitions though? Again a surprisingly easy step that can be set up automatically depending on your software but so many people seem to just let it go thinking that OK I have the program I should be good to go! No! You need to keep it up to date on the latest anti-virus definitions because the hackers of the world are always evolving trying to get in on your “important things”.
