Here is a news flash we need computers! Wow that was a truly enlightening statement was it not, we actually need computers and I suppose we will need people to work those computers
I point out this obvious statement for one reason really I saw some news today that was talking about the fact that computer science college courses are seeing their first rise in enrollments since the dot com bubble burst back in 2002. Apparently that bubble popping was enough to scare people away from pursuing a career in IT.
It looks like the recession is having the opposite effect on the persona of having a computer science degree and now the true value in computers and IT careers has come full circle. There are two articles of information that give some good information on this growing trend are a recent report released from the Computing Research Association. The Computing Degree and Enrollment Trends report validates this trend by stating that there was a 6% increase in people enrolling in computer classes in 2008 over the prior year. That was the first increase in enrollments for computer classes since way back in 2002.
The other report comes from the US Department of Labor and this job projection report makes employment prediction trends into the year 2010. Basically this report backs up the information found in the computing degree and enrollment trends report. People who have computer science degrees are going to see a big increase in job demand in the next few years. Especially in the fields of IT and programmers for applications seeing the biggest spike in demand within the next year.
It’s interesting I think to note that what the dot com bubble bursting did was clear the table of all the crap that was coming up on the internet. Now as we have moved forward over the last few years and web2.0 applications and websites have taken off the stigma attached to a computer science degree has faded away. Honestly how many of you have thought lately if only I knew how to do a little computer programming I could create the next “Facebook, MySpace, Digg or Twitter”.
Even better than those things has been the recent explosion of the popular app store from Apple. If ever there was a better example of how far a little computer science knowledge can take you. The people who have enough computer programming savvy are making apps for the Apple store in the hopes that the new app they create will take off and make them a small fortune.
Face it we live in a computer driven world and we are going to continue to need faster, smarter and more creative programs to run all these computers. Who better to build those future computer programs than the people enrolling in all those computer science programs in the colleges and universities around the world.
Did you read the news the other day in the yearly results from the Forbes magazine that puts Mr. Computer programmer Bill Gates back at the top of the richest people in the world? I know what a shocker right? He lost something like $10 billion dollars of his net worth in this recession and that’s just in the last year! I am merely pointing this out not for the fact that he is a billionaire many times over but for why he is a billionaire. His knowledge in computer science, computer applications and IT is what got him there and wouldn’t you know know it there is still plenty of room in the land of computers for the rest of us.
I’m telling you some one in our lifetime is going to come along with the next big computer application to revolutionize the way we do something with computers. That person will be even richer than Bill Gates some day and you watch it will be some one that is in the field of computers or is working with computer science. OK I think I have gone on long enough on this rant about the value there is in having computer knowledge for your future career. If you are still not convinced make sure you click on those two links I gave you to those two reports from the US Department of Labor and Computing Research Association. They are pdf files with a lot of details and blah blah blah about why a career in computer application programming and IT is a very good idea
