Dell Puts Pinkie Toe In Digital Distribution Pool

There was an interesting post I saw today regarding the computer maker Dell and Paramount Studios. Apparently they have cut a deal to join resources and offer movies to come preloaded on computers purchased through Dell. The first movie and the only movie at this point is the new release of Iron Man. The movie will include all the extras of the hard copy DVD being sold in the stores and you will be aloud to burn yourself a single hard copy as well. As the article noted there really is not much news on the deal at this point and as of right now there are no other reports of other Hollywood studios jumping on this band wagon.

Honesty I read this article and I thought what is the point of this deal? This to me just looks like a cheesy gimmick to try and get people to buy a Dell computer. Seriously how many sources of hard copy, digital download and rentals do we need to get our home movie viewing fix. Are people really that lazy that they would spend the money to get a movie pre-installed onto their computer.

I also see this move by Dell as a possible attempt by the company to get a piece of the digital distribution market that is so dominated by Apple and their iTunes Store. I think you may be a little late to the party on this one Dell. A pretty feeble attempt too if I may say. One Hollywood studio to release one movie, talk about sticking your pinkie toe in the water to just test it out. I just don’t really see this type of digital distribution taking off, I think most people are very happy with iTunes and other digital store outlets. Sorry Dell, Iron Man is a great movie and you all make some good computers but you should stick to what you do best and leave the movie distribution to the pros.
